January Check-In!
Hi Friends,
January always arrives a little softer in the wine world. The rush of the year hasn’t quite kicked in yet. Vineyards are full, cellars are busy, but there’s still space to think before the noise returns.
A new year doesn’t mean a clean slate. It means a continuation. 2026 will still ask hard questions of South African wine. Pricing pressure isn’t going anywhere. Consumers are more selective, more values driven, and more curious than ever. Markets remain unpredictable. And yet, there’s something steady beneath it all.
What we’re noticing already is a shift in energy.
Less chasing everything.
More focus on what actually matters.
Clearer stories. Tighter ranges. More intentional decisions. This feels like a year where authenticity won’t just be a buzzword. It will be the difference between being heard and being overlooked. Wines with a sense of place. Brands with a point of view. Producers who know who they’re speaking to, and why.
There’s also a quiet confidence returning. Not loud optimism, but the kind that comes from experience. From having weathered enough seasons to know that momentum is built slowly, thoughtfully, and often behind the scenes.
So as 2026 begins, our hope for the industry is simple.
More clarity than chaos.
More purpose than panic.
More courage to back the long game. Here’s to a year of thoughtful moves, honest storytelling, and showing up again with care for the craft and the people behind it.
We’ll see you in the year ahead.
Warmly,
The Golden Ratio Team
